Hosting luncheon for the 57th International Mathematical Olympiad Hong Kong Committee
The 57th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) was held in Hong Kong from July 9 to 16 this year. This was the first time since 1994 Hong Kong hosted the competitions.
This afternoon, I hosted a luncheon at Government House to thank the 57th IMO Hong Kong Committee, including its Chairman, Professor K P Shum, as well as other friends for their dedicated efforts. They have worked hard in the past three to four years to make the competition a success.
In this year's IMO, the Hong Kong team ranked ninth out of 109 participating country/region teams, winning three gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal. This is the best result that Hong Kong has ever achieved in the competition. Congratulations to the team for the outstanding performance.
The current-term Government actively promotes STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education and encourages students to study these subjects. Our contestants' remarkable achievements in the IMO will help stimulate students' interest in STEM, particularly in mathematics.
