Free admission to museums
If you want to take a break, going to a museum is a good choice.
In this year's Policy Address, I announced that "the Government has decided to make free admission to the permanent exhibitions of designated Leisure and Cultural Services Department museums a standing practice."
Starting today, permanent exhibitions of five museums are open to the public for free. Visiting a museum can broaden our horizons. It is also a good family activity.
By implementing this policy, we do not merely want to help the public save a few dollars, but also encourage Hong Kong people to go to museums more often, so as to add more colour to their life. This afternoon, I visited the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum.
If you, too, are going to the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum, you may set aside half a day for the visit. Besides the museum, which is housed in Kom Tong Hall on Castle Road in the Mid-Levels, you may also take the opportunity to go to Hollywood Road and visit PMQ and the Man Mo Temple Compound. The latter will celebrate its 170th anniversary soon. Of course, you cannot leave out the Central Police Station Compound, which is now undergoing large-scale revitalisation works. Along Hollywood Road, there are many other historical sites where revolutionary activities took place during the late Qing period. The area is also dotted with Chinese and Western restaurants serving food at different price levels. You can choose one that suits your taste and budget.
The New Arrangements
With effect from August 1, 2016, the permanent exhibitions of the following five museums are open for free:
- The Hong Kong Museum of History, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, the Hong Kong Museum of Art1, the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence and the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum
The permanent exhibitions of the Hong Kong Science Museum and the Hong Kong Space Museum2 offer free admission to full-time students.
