"Mothers are the greatest in the world" - best wishes to all mothers in Hong Kong

Today is Mother's Day. This special day is an opportunity for all of us in Hong Kong, as sons and daughters, to set aside some time in our busy lives to spend with our mothers or, for those like me, to remember them.

According to the theme song of a Mandarin movie shown some 50 years ago, "Mothers are the greatest in the world, a truth that children who have their mothers with them may not realise." Indeed, children who still have their mothers may not appreciate the physical and psychological stress of pregnancy, the sleepless nights a mother has while selflessly looking after her baby, the anxiety of a mother when her child falls ill, and, on top of all that, the burden of unending household chores. Not until one has become a mother or father and has experienced and gone through all the difficulties involved in raising a child can one come to understand how true it is that "mothers are the greatest in the world".

On Mother's Day, let's give our respect and best wishes to all mothers, including working mothers, single mothers, mothers of children with disabilities and mothers in low-income families. Happy Mother's Day!
