Appreciation and Gratitude
On August 3, I held a reception in Government House to thank 100 people from government departments, contractors of public services and public transport companies for their hard work in serving the community during the most powerful Typhoon Vicente. Their families were invited to the occasion so that I could also thank them for their support and understanding of their family members' commitment to delivering exceptional services to the community.
The hour-long reception gave me the opportunity to get a better understanding of their work and the operation of the many services that are vital in making Hong Kong a highly efficient, modern metropolis. Every person in the Police Force, the Fire Services, the Government Flying Service, the Civil Aid Service, the Hong Kong Observatory, Hong Kong Tramways, the MTR Corporation and the bus companies is an integral part of our massive, sophisticated public services system. When each member fulfils his or her duty, the entire system can work to protect our lives and property and to ensure orderly conduct of social and economic activities.
Public officers and public service providers should deliver services to the satisfaction of the community. While criticism is necessary to remind them of the need to pursue continuous improvement, our appreciation and gratitude for the good work they have done can also encourage them to make progress.
Should you also hear the story of a woman who had to be admitted to hospital for miscarriage during the recent strong typhoon, you would be as proud of our ambulance and medical teams' assistance as I am.
