Together we can do it!
On April 9 I went to Beijing to receive the instrument of appointment from Premier Wen Jiabao. Before leaving I was tasked to present to him with a thank-you letter from the Amoy Gardens Owners Committee.
During the outbreak of SARS in 2003, Amoy Gardens was one of our most seriously affected residential complexes. Many Amoy residents chose to move out amidst fear and anxiety. Together with experts from the Hong Kong Coalition of Professional Services, I made visits to the area to see how we might be of help. After repeated discussions and examinations, we managed to solve the problem of virus dispersion at Block E, which was worst affected, using a new drainage system design. Today, with residents’ concerted efforts, the Amoy Gardens has regained its liveliness.
The selfless devotion of those that have taken part is of course exemplary. But what’s more important is the message: Together, we can overcome all difficulties. Nothing is insurmountable if we are united.
Expressing goodwill and encouragement, Premier Wen’s reply to Amoy residents also stressed the importance of solidarity. I earnestly hope that we can all stand united and build a more prosperous, progressive and righteous society for the people of Hong Kong.
